Twenty-two ferryboats will offer visitors free shuttle services across the Huangpu River during the six-month 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, the local website Eastday.com reports.
It is estimated that the Expo Park will receive approximately 400,000 visitors a day between May 1 and October 31. The ferryboats will be put into use to ease anticipated traffic congestion, said Wu Changli, vice president of the Shanghai Ferry Co., Ltd., which will operate the ferryboat service.
Although people can also choose other means of transportation such as subways and buses, a ferryboat has its own advantages, which will enable visitors to enjoy vibrant scenes along the Huangpu River, including the Expo pavilions.
Wu predicts that the ferryboats will transport some 200,000 people each day across the river, which divides the city into two parts, namely the Pudong District (east of the Huangpu River) and the Puxi District (west of the Huangpu River).
Four of the ferryboats are currently in trial use. All 22 will begin service by next April.
