Antigua and Barbuda to Join CARICOM States at EXPO 2010

2009. 6 November

by S. Coward
(caribbeanpressreleases.com) Antigua & Barbuda will join other CARICOM States in representing the Caribbean region at the 2010 Expo to be held in Shanghai, China, May 1 to October 31, next year.

The other participating states are the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Antigua & Barbuda, like other states, will be putting together a package of entertainment, attractions, and samples for distribution and showing at the CARICOM Pavilion.

The Government of the Peoples Republic of China is funding the participation of the official delegations from CARICOM and the design and construction of their individual booths. A Financial Agreement was signed by the Secretary General of CARICOM, Mr. Edwin Carrington, and the Expo Organizers, on behalf of all member states. Member states have been warned by CARICOM to be very frugal with their touring parties and financial output, given the current economic downturn.

Since it is the practice of member states of the Caribbean Community to have joint participation in international expositions conducted under the auspices of the International Bureau of Expositions, the CARICOM Secretariat is coordinating the participation of member states, and have had national coordinators appointed in each state.

Minister of Tourism the Hon. John Maginley joins his Caricom colleagues in recognizing that China is fast becoming a major tourism target market and as such supports the regional effort to promote the Caribbean to China and the rest of the world as a premier tourist destination.

The Ministry of Tourism has appointed Rachel Collis to be Antigua & Barbuda's National Co-ordinator for the Expo Shanghai 2010 project. According to Collis, Antigua and Barbuda has met all its commitments to ensure full participation. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is going to demonstrate, through its participation, its commitment to the spirit of the working partnership which it currently enjoys with the Government and People of the Peoples Republic of China.

One of the highlights of CARICOM States at Expo Shanghai 2010 will be CARICOM National Day which will be held July 17, and will feature the best of the region in entertainment, cuisine, arts and craft, etc. Antigua & Barbuda's attendance at Expo Shanghai 2010 will also offer the opportunity to showcase the island as a tourism destination to the fast-emerging Chinese travel market.

Antigua & Barbuda was also represented at the 2008 Expo which was held in the city of Zaragoza in Spain.
