Before traveling to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, visitors will be able to get up-to-date traffic information through a Website.
And while on the go, they will be able to find out about parking lots, Metro-station congestion and crowds at entrances and major pavilions through real-time cell phone short messages.
Local government will develop a smart transportation system to manage traffic during the half-year event opening in May, Xue Meigen, deputy director of Shanghai City Transportation Planning Institute, said yesterday.
About 400,000 people are expected to visit the Expo zone each day, with some 800,000 people in holidays.
"How to properly manage transportation of the huge people flow while not harming city traffic is a big challenge," Xue said.
Visitors from neighboring provinces will be urged to park in four big park-and-ride parking lots.
"To encourage people to park cars at these parking lots and take Expo shuttle buses to the zone, we are considering to charge no or very low fee," Xue said.
"Metro and Expo shuttle buses will be the main transport in downtown areas to ease pressure to traffic."
