The first franchised online shop for official products promoting the 2010 World Expo has opened to both meet the growing demand and fight against piracy of the goods.
Chinese consumers can now buy nearly 2,000 Expo licensed products at the official online shop at www.eshop-expo2010.com . Meanwhile, the English version of the shopping website will also soon be available to worldwide buyers.
By the end of September the Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau had authorized 320 stores to sell Expo licensed products in 47 cities around China such as Beijing and Shanghai. When the Expo kicks off, the total of authorized shops should exceed 5,000.
However, not all consumers who are interested in Expo souvenirs can have easy access to proper retail shops, especially those who are living in small towns and rural areas.
The situation has encouraged the spread of pirated Expo goods. Take Haibao, the Expo mascot, for example, web users can easily find many different Haibao items on shopping websites, but many of them are pirated.
Expo organizers hope the launch of the official Expo shopping website will help crack down on piracy and offer more convenient services to consumers from both China and abroad.
