Clinton pledges support for USA Pavilion

2009. 16 November

(shanghaidaily.com) United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived at the under-construction USA Pavilion on the Shanghai Expo site at 9:05am today after a visit to a showcase about the world fair at the Shanghai Expo Mansion.

Despite the rain, about 12 foreign media and 25 or so domestic media covered the event.

The US Commissioner General to the World Expo 2010 Jose Villarreal opened proceedings, then Shanghai Vice Mayor Yang Xiong sincerely thanked the sponsors that made the US's participation possible, and wished the USA Pavilion well.

During Clinton's 10-minute speech, she thanked sponsors and reiterated the significance of the USA Pavilion, speaking of her determination to support it.

Speaking to the sponsors, she said: "We are grateful for your support for this success."

Clinton mentioned a couple of sponsors including Pepsi, GM and P&G. She also said she appreciated that the Boeing Company has doubled its contribution from US$1 million to US$2 million.

With regard to Expo and Shanghai, Clinton said: "It's fitting that this Expo will be held in Shanghai and Shanghai is one of the most dynamic cities in the world.

"The USA Pavilion will be built around the theme Better City, Better Life. It will demonstrate the spirit and the core values of the United States, and the pavilion will also tell a four-dimensional story.

"I look forward to being here in summer to see (for) myself our magnificent pavilion."

Clinton cited a movie called "Field of Dreams" starring Kevin Costner, who despite all skeptics and difficulties built a baseball field on a cornfield.

She quoted one of the film's lines" "If you build it, they will come." She added: "We are building it – 70 million people will come. "

Finally, she said she expected even more visitors to Expo Shanghai than predicted, up to 100 million.
