Atletico Madrid plans Shanghai Expo stand

2009. 20 November

(english.people.com.cn) Spanish first division soccer club Atletico Madrid will continue its attempts to gain a foothold in the Chinese market by maintaining a stand at the Expo 2010 exhibition in Shanghai, according to Spanish sports paper Diario AS on Friday.

Atletico signed an agreement with Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday with the aim of strengthening the club's image in China as well as facilitating cooperation in training techniques
and the transfer of players between the two entities.

Atletico and Shanghai Shenhua are also looking for a date for both teams to play a friendly match in Shanghai next summer. That game will probably be played in either the last week of July or the first week of August.

The Spanish outfit also aims to make its presence felt by organizing a stand at the next Expo exhibition, which is to be celebrated in Shanghai between May 1 and October 30 of 2010.

AS explains that with an estimated 70 million visitors, the Expo is the perfect way to project Atletico's image throughout China.

Meanwhile the club's General Director, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, is currently in Vietnam speaking to various multinational companies with the aim of finding a sponsor to put its name on Atletico's projected new Stadium.

Atletico will leave its Vicente Calderon Stadium in 2012 to move to the "La Peineta" Stadium, which would have been the Olympic Stadium had Madrid been awarded the 2016 Olympic Games.
