UBPA to become office, recreation zone

2009. 4 December

by Yang Jian
(shanghaidaily.com) The Urban Best Practices Area of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo will be turned into an office, bar and entertainment area after the 184-day event concludes, an Expo planner revealed yesterday.

However, the new landmark in Puxi will be distinct due to its renovated old factories, Tang Zilai, chief Expo designer for the area, said at an Expo forum in Jiading District.

Essentially, planners have tried to make the Expo site another UBPA case that remains once the event ends, Tang said.

The 151,200-square-meter area features more than 50 buildings from cities from across the world. Most copy buildings in their cities that have proven to be either environmentally friendly or good examples of how to protect older structures.

The area also has four factories that once belonged to either Jiangnan Shipyard or Nanshi Power Plant. These factories have been renovated and converted into pavilions for the Expo.

After the Expo, all the UBPA buildings that involve distinctive architectural styles will remain. They will be transformed into a complex including office buildings, galleries, museums and pubs, Tang said.

The converted factories will be turned into an innovation park, just like the 1933 Old Millfun, a former slaughterhouse that will be turned into a modern home in Hongkou District for the fashion industry, entertainment venues, offices, restaurants and cafes.

The UBPA cases include a "smart home" that will be built by host city Shanghai.

The entry of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, will be a park that automatically purifies water.

Liverpool and Hamburg will build energy-efficient office buildings.
