China Mobile to pour RMB 31 bln in Shanghai's IT sector

(chinaknowledge.com) China Mobile Communications Corp , parent company of the country's largest telecom operator China Mobile Ltd, on Tuesday signed a framework agreement with the Shanghai Municipal government to support the development of the city's IT industry, the Shanghai Securities News reported.

Under the agreement, China Mobile will invest a total of RMB 31 billion in Shanghai until 2011, of which RMB 3 billion will be used in the construction of TD-SCDMA network and RMB 1 billion to be used in the process of 3G technology infrastructure preparation for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

The investment for the information infrastructure construction of Shanghai World Expo is expected to provide mobile or fixed-line services to 800,000 visitors per day and have 250 office buildings covered by its networks, said the company, adding that it will set up extra base stations for the event.

In addition, the investment will help create about 3,000 new jobs during the period, according to the agreement.

China Telecommunications Corp, parent of the country's largest fixed-line operator China Telecom Corp Ltd, also agreed earlier to invest RMB 26 billion within two years in the city's IT industry.
