New-energy vehicles on the horizon

2009. 4 December

by Zha Minjie
(shanghaidaily.com) City transportation will become more environmentally friendly as Shanghai plans to put into use about 4,000 new-energy vehicles in the next three years, including 1,000 for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, officials said yesterday.

Ma Jing, chief engineer with the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Information Technology Development Commission, said the city should "move forward" and use more green vehicles, especially in public transport.

The city began a program to develop new-energy vehicles about four years ago.

However, it did not fast track the program until the auto industry became one of nine sectors that benefited from government subsidies and other incentives.

The city plans to produce and sell 300,000 new-energy vehicles around the country by 2015, when the industry is expected to be fully formed.

Shanghai has over 200,000 buses but less than 100 use new-energy technologies.
