Cool Bike Shanghai: Ride with a purpose this weekend

Forget tree hugging, and don’t wait until the 2010 Expo to go green, start on Saturday, December 5, with the city’s first “Cool Bike” event. The idea behind the event is to harness pedal power to enact social and environmental change. All that from the seat of your bike.
The idea is simple: encouraging city residents use bikes as transportation more often as a way to reduce air pollution. The political subtext of the event (there always is), is Copenhagen climate summit; riders will be showing solidarity with countries looking to truly make an impact on global warming. This is far from your normal political rally though, if you enjoy taking your wheels for a spin and meeting other riders, that’s all you need to join up.
The route includes both sides of the Huangpu (Puxi and Pudong), as well as a photo shoot of the whole group. The photo will be sent to global leaders in Copenhagen to show the commitment of the Shanghai populus to ensuring a healthy future for the city by reducing air pollution. The event is free but you need to register to join in the ride. Sign up on the event’s homepage.
Cool Bike starting points:
- The Puxi starting location is at the Specialized Store, 221 Jianguo Xi Lu, by Shaanxi Lu at 1pm
- The Pudong starting location is by the Yangfu Ferry Line, Zhangyang Lu, by Binjiang Rd at 2pm
At the mid point of the ride the groups will meet up at the Pearl Tower and everyone will get the chance to sign a large banner. Photos of the cyclists and banner will then be sent to global leaders in Copenhagen to show Shanghai's commitment to ensuring a healthy future for the city with reduced air pollution.
The Cool Bike ride will finish around 3:30pm at Fuxing Park
