Taiwan to protest inclusion in 'China Pavillion' at Shanghai exposition

2009. 10 December

(etaiwannews.com) Taiwan will lodge a protest with the organizer of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai for including Taiwan in the "China Pavilion," as this implies that Taiwan is part of China's territory, an official said yesterday.

Tsai Wen-kai, director of the Taiwan Trade Center in Shanghai, said the arrangement is in violation of a contract signed between the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, which states that the Taiwan Pavilion will be located in an area of Zone A designated for the national pavilions of Asian countries.

According to the exhibition's master plan posted on its official website, Zone A will host the China Pavilion, as well as national pavilions for Asian countries other than those in Southeast Asia. "The China Pavilion consists of the 47,000-square-meter Chinese national pavilion, a 38,000-square-meter regional joint pavilion and a 3,300-square-meter pavilion for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan," the plan stipulates.

In Taipei that same day, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Vice Chairman Liu Te-shun said that such an arrangement is "definitely not appropriate" and that the MAC supports the TWTC's decision to lodge a protest with the organizer.
