Chile Exhibit of Shanghai Photos

2009. 11 December

by Pamela Morales
(santiagotimes.cl) A new photography exhibit, “Chile, the road to Shanghai Expo 2010,” in Santiago´s downtown Baquedano Metro opened Thursday.

Photographs by Chinese-born Charlie Xia show the urban transformation of Shanghai, with modern architecture coexisting with traditional architecture.

“The worlds he explores are diverse,” said museum curator Cristían Faure. “They give a glimpse into the cultural and urban climate that will be seen at the Shanghai Expo.”

The 28-year-old Xia lived in the US, England and Germany before returning to China seven years ago. His photographs capture not just the rapid changes in Shanghai’s urban landscape, but also the “relationship between individuals and their city.”

In May 2010, 192 nations will gather in Shanghai for the World Expo. Countries will present exhibits based on this year’s theme, “Better Cities, Better Life,” with special emphasis on how cities can be developed in a sustainable way.

Faure says the exhibit includes images and plans for the planned 27,000 square foot pavilion Chile is constructing for Shanghai 2010.
