Many Show Up in Shanghai to Celebrate Chanukah

Many dozens of Jews took part in Chanukah celebrations at the Bayit Yehudi Jewish house above the Beit Hamidrash Hasepharadi study hall in Shanghai, China on Thursday.
In addition to local personalities, including Israeli vice-consul Amir Lahti, the event was attended by Deputy Trade Commissioner Yaffa Ben-Ari, Director-General of the Israeli pavillion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, who was cited for making sure that only kosher food will be allowed into the pavillion when the fair opens in May.
The Jewish community of Shanghai (overall population about 18 million) numbers about 3,000. All its members are there on a temporary basis with full-time homes in Israel, Europe and the United States. Community president Morris Ohana has been cited for working with Chinese authorities to maintain Torah and the unique character of the community.
