Chinese variety show held in Houston

(news.xinhuanet.com) A Chinese variety show was held here Saturday night to celebrate 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the New Year.

    The first major Chinese performing arts show jointly presented by the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Houston and the City of Houston was attended by more than 1,100 audiences from all walks of life in Houston, Texas.

    Dances, folk songs, Peking opera and martial art were presented on the show by overseas Chinese artists in the Houston areas, inviting warn applause from the audience.

    At a reception before the show, Consul General Gao Yanping said that in 2009, the Chinese Consulate General in Houston and Houston people have shared many unforgettable moments and witnessed a series of grand celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. diplomatic relations in both China and the United States.

    "2010 will be another inspiring year," said Gao, noting that the Shanghai World Expo, to be held from May 1 to Oct. 31 in 2010,will be participated in by more than 200 countries, regions and international organizations as well as about 70 million visitors from China and abroad.

    "Shanghai and China are ready to open their arms to embrace friends from all over the world," said Gao.

    U.S. Commissioner General for Shanghai World Expo Jose Villarreal, representative for Texas Governor Rick Perry, and other dignitaries also delivered short speeches at the reception, wishing the success of Shanghai World Expo and a bright future for China-U.S. relations.
