Dutch Treat

2009. 22 December

by Bob Yang
(shanghaidaily.com) The Netherlands presented 500 seeds of a new cultivated variety of tulip to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo organizer yesterday.

It was especially created for the Expo.

The Dutch government named the tulip the "Treasure of the Sea." That's the literal meaning of "Haibao," the name of the Expo mascot.

The flower will have a bright orange bloom and black spotted green leaves in April.

"We want to offer you a lasting and living symbol of the ties between the people of the Netherlands and the people of Shanghai," said Eric Verwaal, consul general of the Netherlands in Shanghai.

It took gardeners 20 years to create the new variety of tulip by making different hybrids of the flower.
