  • 851. Airline Adds 12 Planes

    2010. 23 January

    (Shanghai Daily)CHINA Eastern Airlines expects to earn 4 billion yuan (US$586 million) from Expo visitors, it said yesterday. The Shanghai-based carrier is allocating 12 extra aircraft to serve the city, increasing its total number to 108.

    "We will add 300 flights weekly in Shanghai during the Expo period to and from the Hongqiao airport," said Ma Xulun, general manager of China Eastern.

    2010. 23 January

    (Shanghai Daily) An online calculator for visitors to the Expo to check their carbon emissions has been released.

    On www.cleanair.net.cn, visitors can select their points of departure and means of transport and can get a reading of how much carbon dioxide they have released on their journey to Shanghai. A verion in English, and six other languages, will be released before the Expo opens.

  • 853. Residents Back Call To Use Public Transport

    2010. 23 January

    TRAFFIC organization's plan for the Expo have won the backing of city residents with more than 95 percent of Shanghai citizens saying they will take public transport to the site.

    An online survey found 50 percent would be using the Metro with another 22 percent going by bus.

    2010. 23 January

    TEST runs started yesterday on Metro Line 13, the subway that goes through the Expo site.

    The line will have five six-carriage trains to carry visitors. Each train can take about 2,000 passengers at intervals of six minutes. Security and ticket checks will take place at Madang Road Station. The station also connects with Line 9.

    (Shanghai Daily)SHANGHAI'S economy secured a year-on-year growth of 8.2 percent in 2009, with faster expansion in the service industry countering a slower pace in manufacturing, the Shanghai Statistics Bureau said yesterday.

    The gross domestic product in Shanghai last year jumped to 1.49 trillion yuan (US$218 billion), with annualized rates in the four quarters settling at 3.1 percent, 7.9 percent, 9.8 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively.

    Organizers of the Shanghai World Expo are willing to appeal for a temporary lifting of bans on foreign publications for the convenience of overseas participants and visitors to the 2010 mega event, a senior official said yesterday.

    (Xinhua) -- Lu Chuan, director of award-winning film "City of Life and Death," on Thursday started shooting a short film for the China Pavilion at the upcoming Shanghai Expo.

    The 8-minute film, "Beautiful Progress," or Mei De Li Cheng," would focus on the changes in Chinese cities since China introduced the reform and opening-up policy in 1978, Lu said.

  • 861. Clean-energy vehicles to reduce emissions around Expo Park

    About 450 clean-energy cars and buses will be running inside the expo park during the six-month event.
